Biography

Ron Kuwahara

Before I became a professional artist, I enjoyed a rewarding career as a physicist. My retirement as a scientist with the Government of Canada allowed me to attend NSCAD University and complete a BFA in painting in 2011.

Scientist

As a physicist I am respectful of the forces of nature. I am fascinated by the geophysical, biological and evolutionary processes that created the planet, the continents and the biodiversity of our world. Visits to nature reveal complex and harmonious ecosystems that evolved without human intervention. Nature reminds me that humans are only one of many species entitled to life on this planet.

Artist

As an artist I see of the beauty and harmony of the world. How lucky we are to be sentient beings who can appreciate the grandeur of the forest, the sunrise over the ocean, or the colourful leaves of autumn. Such beauty, created by patterns of light and shadow, inspires my paintings. I mix and splash paint into abstracted colour patches that form recognizable images from afar.

Preservation

I am grateful to be living in Canada where nature is close at hand. However, these nature areas are becoming scarcer as urban development continually encroach our cities. Humankind has ongoing ambitions to control the environment and to build places to suit ‘civilization’. I am an advocate for the Nova Scotia Nature Trust. I appreciate everyone working to preserve wilderness places.
